Take Ten Challenge!

The Lara bars have inspired me. I have a gorp mix which I take whenever we leave the house - instant portable nutrition. So, I finally made the Lara bars with dates (remember to remove the seeds, they are hard on your food processor. ask me how I know...) and tossed in my gorp mix. OH MY!! fabulous!! delicious!! Amazing!

There was some old Chinese theory of food that we should eat a variety of 31 different foods every day.

So, I counted and there were 15 different…

tetanus vaccine?

For starters, wounds that bleed well are hardly at risk of tetanus. Tetanus only grows in an anaerobic environment. For any future ACTUAL tetanus exposure, Immuoglobulin could be offered at the time of any serious injury. It would only be offered IF it were a very dirty cut, which hadn't been cleaned for a long duration, or a crush

injury. Developing tetanus is quite difficult unless…

Honey

"Honey" - Do be aware that most honey has been heat pasteurized. Raw honey has amazing antimicrobial benefits and even probiotic benefits - including bifidum, the predominant microbial in the young human gut. As we age, we lose bifidum as the dominant microbial. (or as we lose bifidum in the gut, we age?)

Bifidum is in some honey and in breastmilk. Otherwise, I have heard there isn't another natural source. The "source" for inoculating our human gut at birth is breastmilk. Proper ph…

Pancreatic cancer

While researching for my mom who had pancreatic cancer, I learned about Nigella sativa. If you don't know of it, it is an old traditional middle eastern medicinal food called black cumin seed. Here is a bunch more of the research I found about the health benefits related to pancreatic cancer.

Trying to Slay the Reflux Demon

Most moms like to go in and sneak a peek and watch their baby sleep. Me, I couldn't stand it. It was our first sign that something was seriously wrong with our baby. She looked like she was possessed by demons while she slept. She would flail. Arch her backs. Make that startled movement you make like you are dreaming that you are falling off of a cliff. She would scream. And most horrifyingly - she would stop breathing for a few seconds.

My husband and I would take turns holding her… Continue

The Waking Nightmare

It starts slowly: You hear a rustling beside you and know it is beginning. Soon she is tossing and turning constantly, trying to get into any position that may make it hurt less. You've seen her arch her back so far back she is sleeping like a backwards C. Sometimes there is moaning. Wimpering. Crying. On bad nights, full out screaming. Then the coughing begins. Every few minutes there it is, the weak cough cough of someone with acid in their chest.… Continue

The Little Scout Who Couldn't

I would love help sorting out and coming up with a plan to help my Scout, she is 22 months old. She has slept through the night comfortably only 4 nights in those 22 months. Many days she is in mild to severe pain - either from reflux or in her tummy. About 4 days a week she refuses a meal. She has gone down below 10% on the growth chart…

"Yeast" intolerance

Yeast means several different things. Basically, there are good yeasts and bad yeasts. And there are live yeasts and dead yeasts.

"Yeast" collectively isn't the problem. There is (dead) yeast in (some) bread for instance and there is (live) yeast in (some) yogurt. Dead yeast are not the issue with bread. Bread breaks down rapidly into simple carbohydrates which feed "bad" yeasts in the gut and body. The "pathological" yeasts are commonly candida albicans. But simple sugars, not…

My Master Tonic

I heard about Fire cider years ago and as of 3 years ago started making my own. It has helped me keep viruses away as well as shoretn the cycle of them. Especially chest colds which I seem to get. If I end up with a chest cold, i like to put some of the Master Tonic in the firdge. Makes it so cooling!

Here is a pic of Master Tonic…

REAL kefir grains vs. kefir starter

I've not used kefir starter as it only has 7 microbials and REAL kefir grains have 56+ beneficial microbials. Kefir grains are free, or less than $15, all over the internet for a lifetime supply.

Here is more about easy homemade probiotics:... http://heal-thyself.ning.com/profiles/blogs/homemade-probiotics

Tuna and mercury, and green tea!

"White/albacore tuna in water" contained the highest amount of EPA/DHA (Omega 3 fatty acids) among the canned tuna but mercury levels were four times higher than those in "light tuna in water".

EPA/DHA amounts were higher in salmon and mackerel which contain less mercury than canned tuna product.

This *in vitro* study, looks at "Dietary mercury exposure and effects of foods containing phytochemicals on mercury bioavailability". (basically which foods make you absorb less… Continue

Why do it?

So if you're reading this entry you are on the Heal Thyself website. Why are you here?

I'll tell you why I'm here. I made promise to myself a couple years ago when I was in a very broken place. That promise was to love myself more fully. Why? Because it occurred to me that if I did that I could love my family more fully.

I began my journey in researching health and wellness or holistic living first out of fear. Fear did not help me feel better or more loved. When I changed… Continue
