Getting Started

I'm planning on writing a fair amount here about my journey with food...what I'm changing...what I'm not and how I feel along the way.

Starting now...

adding daily green smoothy
adding stoneybrook yogurt (while I wait for my kefir grains)
adding lemon and Epsom salt to my water
buying as much organic as I can find
eat real food

going to enjoy my last couple of days with my…

I'm starting my journey

I am a happy, joyous and free person in all areas of my life except my body. Body image along with body baggage is now what i want to heal. I look forward to experiencing the same freedom with body as I do with mind and spirit. Not exactly sure why it has taken me this long to get around to this piece...yet I am sure it is all divinely timed.

Thank you Pat for this amazing place to help me learn and grow.

"Pink eye", without antibiotics

Breastmilk is best. :-) We had to 'borrow' some from a lactating friend once for just this reason. Kinda have to be good friends, lol. It'll keep refrigerated and fresh for a few days, if you aren't using it from the "tap".

I've read that a particular antibody in the breast milk, called immunoglobulin A, prevents the pink eye bacteria from attaching to the mucosal surface of the eye. I had pink eye as a nurse. I was able to work without taking any antibiotics, with strict… Continue

My 1st "Heal Thyself" blog......

Thank you Ms. Pat for the opportunity to just release some thoughts into the universe about my journey concerning holistic living.

Not sure if anyone will ever read this but it's still refreshing to have my say about how making this choice to be better is effecting me and mine.

I'm a child of the eighties. What that means to me is that this whole eating "holistically" was not a priority in my home. Not to mention, I grew up in the south and I'm black so add to that soul… Continue

Controversial Phytic Acid??

Phytic acid is intentionally consumed by some people because of the potential cancer-retarding benefits and diabetic benefits ("antioxidant"). However, the phytic acid retards mineral bio-availability, especially important minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.

Here is Amanda Rose on an informative video about the pros/cons and particulars of phytic acid consumption.…

Gut Healing with a Raw Vegan Diet?

(this is a repost of a member wondering about gut healing with a raw vegan diet)

You have some difficult questions which have no absolute answers, imo. The severity of diet one embarks upon or embraces has as much to do with "what you feed your skin and your mind and your outlook" as your body.

I don't believe in a 'search and destroy' paradigm about life and living. I believe the world is exactly as it needs to be and is whatever it is, for a reason. Many embrace a… Continue

Epilepsy

This is an old email about natural alternatives for epilepsy. I'm copying it in whole. It is mostly a summary (without source links) since the family wasn't very research savvy. GreenMedInfo.com is another amazing resource of natural alternatives. http://www.greenmedinfo.com/search/node/epilepsy

Homemade Probiotics?

It is cheap and simple to make whole food probiotics at home.

Dairy-free kefir, or any type of dairy could be made into kefir. And the kefir grains reproduce and you will be giving them away to friends and strangers in no time, lol.

Refrigerated bottled probiotics generally have fewer probiotics than active…

Ionized Water?

Water is a difficult (and important) topic. From my understanding, the 'purpose' of ionization is some antioxidant benefit and some alkalizing benefit. Both of these can be enjoyed inexpensively and naturally in mineral-rich liquids (and whole foods).

Depending upon what you are eating/drinking now, it could provide benefits. But, from what I've read, it doesn't provide a host of minerals or microminerals, such as herbal infusions, good ole' tea, juice, fruits, veggies, bone broth,… Continue

Everything Probiotics...

Whole food probiotics are one of the MOST important foods for a healthy body, we are learning, especially in this age of multi-drug resistant bacteria.

Here are extensive references regarding the benefits of probiotics.

There are some 400-600 microbials which inhabit and reproduce in the

gut. Some are only there transiently and therefore, to have a "healthy"

gut (based upon our historical traditional cultures), we need to consume

beneficial microbials…
