keratosis pilaris? (bumps on the backs of your arms/thighs)

keratosis pilaris (bumps on the backs of your arms/thighs)...

OK, my DH has bumps on the back of his arms. So, I'd like to know more about it.

My 5yo son also has a little bit of it, but I think it is because it is winter time--I will watch to see if it goes away in the summer. He had very dry hands but now that I got very regularly (90%) on him taking his teaspoon of CLO every day his hands are no longer dry. So, it seems if the arms were just dry skin, they might have cleared up by now.  He has no other symptoms whatsoever--I'm on this forum for me and for general knowledge. Fortunately my kids are quite healthy. The only other thing that I can say about my son is that he gets bloody noses at night, but not much if I run the humidifier each night. So, it's just these bumps that I'm wondering about.

Again, would like to know for DH. DH also has a whole history that I could post a long page on, even though he would say his only problem is overweight. I can see all the underlying reasons for why that might be:-)  One of those things is that over the years he has slowly developed cysts all over his body. They are not pre-cancerous - have had a standard doctor check them. But, this is clearly not optimal. Also, he did two rounds of Accutane (1 as teen, 1 as adult).

DH is not on CLO yet, but I can no longer accept that so I am starting with some Carlson's capsules. He hates getting the fish burps but will not take it on a spoon.

Nordic Naturals never gives me the fish burps. They are certified heavy metals free too. Er but I guess they may not be pure CLO.. I've forgotten.
Here is a thread about KP: http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=1034056&h...

Apparently, vit A, EFAs, vit C and vit D are beneficial.

Overweight has been associated with microbial imbalance in the gut. I'd suggest whole food probiotics for all of you. :-)

I've had keratosis pilaris, or what I always affectionately called "chicken skin", my entire life... sigh. :) Always dreamed of having silky smooth skin on the back of my arms, butt, thighs, sides of stomach, etc. My oldest son also suffers with it pretty badly.

It's weird... but the only time I noticed it went away in both of us, almost completely, was when we had a stomach bug and weren't eating anything for a few days... Hmmmm.
Just curious, do the bumps of this condition usually contain a head, like a pimple?
For a couple years I had skin eruptions on the back of my legs that got better when I went to a homeopathic diet. I may occasionally get a bump here and there. Unfortunately the few years I had them left me with some scars that have since mostly faded.
he has a depressed immune system. in regards to the bloody nose, i hope you are not using tap water. that will make it worse in the long run. boost his immune system, put certified spring water in the humidifier, crack a window instead of using recycled air, and in the morning put a quality vitamin a on a q-tip and moisten the inside of his dry cracked areas to heal. at night, puncture a good vitamin e gel and do the same.

The water we use is actually a Michigan well water, on our property near a lake, which has been softened. We feel that we are still getting minerals because it is SO hard that there's just no way that our softener is taking it all out. And, it still has a taste to it. We soften it to see that it is not putting lots of rust on our fixtures. If it runs out of salt or even gets low, we immediately start seeing yellow in the toilets and tub and laundry and my hands can feel it. I take heart knowing that we at least have water from the ground and not municipal which would have hormones, chlorine, etc. in it. And, it's not coming to us in a plastic bottle? We also salt our food with Redmond RealSalt.

What do you think about this water? And, in our humidifier at night?

What we are doing now is giving Vit C with bioflavanoids each day (Thorne Research which doesn't have any stearates) and multivitamin and also trying a saline rinse at night. There is a bottle from the store that delivers a fine mist and I think it will be a great way for him to segue some day to a neti pot.
well water will make his problem worse. The softener contains NaCl-. The Cl- will bind to the Ca++, leaving Na+. In time it will dry his nose further and if you drink it eventually leads to kidney stones and high blood pressure. If you choose to drink it, don't salt your food. which c from thorne? vitamin a is the vitamin of the immune system. we don't use a multivitamin because the amounts are too low. body balance is a liquid which works very well if you are looking for something like that. our office uses an immune boosting protocol for immune cases. if it's clogged, i don't use a neti. i make my own nasal irrigation system with a flavor injector from wal-mart. $5

I don't even remember high school chemistry. Would switching to the potassium softener salt help?

Would adding something to the water after softening help (with either sodium or potassium softener salt)?

We are using the Thorne Ascorbic Acid with Citrus bioflavanoids.

We are taking cod liver oil with Vit A amount based on westonaprice.org recommendation for his age.

Do you mean to say that the multivitamin is too low in *VitA* or that it is too low in EVERYTHING?

Is body balance the brand name?

So, you are pumping the solution through the sinuses, because rinsing it through is not enough if it is clogged? I would like a lot more info on sinus cleansing because at times I rely on it, but so far I just use standard neti pot. Can you recommend a resource that talks about rinsing upside down or into deeper recesses? If I am using an injector, what am I looking for or trying to achieve?

THANK YOU!

save up and get a home system. http://www.virginpacificwater.com/ warren will tell you what you need. they can ship it to you and most handymen can install them. drink certified (5 letters nyshd) spring waters and mix them up. how old is he?
multivitamins are low in almost everything. body balance is the brand from life force international. i have patients take 100,000 iu of A for 1 month of immune boosting, then re-evaluate. normal protocol is 25,000 (i also get them from nowfoods). cut the dose in half for 13 and younger. this sinus problem is most likely a fungus (due to low immune function). clearing out the blockage will help, but is temporary. you can control the flow with the injector and make a powerful stream, if needed. sounds like you need to boost your own immune system. have you had the indoor air quality checked in your house? mold can grow if the humidity is high.

For my dh and dd, the bumps on the back of their arms are related to dairy intake.
Body Balance is a liquid whole food supplement sold by Life Force international. If you do an internet search, it should come up.

I believe you can purchase directly online, but Life Force is somewhat like a marketing pyramid thing so there are "associates" around the country that sell it.

I purchase mine through my chiropractor. I have been taking it almost every day for about 4 months now. It has helped with my energy, digestion, and my skin has cleared up too. Nothing really drastic though, it was all subtle changes over time.

As to the bumps, sorry, I can't contribute anything of value that hasn't already been mentioned.

Being that the original post was 8 months ago, I hope you'll return and update us if anything has worked. Good luck!
anyone have anything new to say on this?? i got a quarter sized patch on one arm after i gave birth in January and it's been getting worse and worse, now it's on both arms in large areas. the only dietary changes i've made in the last year or so are: FCLO at least weekly (i forget!), homogen./pastuerized dairy switched to raw dairy... and meat is now grass fed beef, occasionally organic chicken and rarely fish. with these changes i've seen general increases in health and my long time battle with acne is nearly gone but this is new and frustrating.
CLO helps slightly for a day and then the KP seems to spread worse after that. this is such a guessing game right now, i'm considering an elimination diet. anyone have any luck with that route?
thanks!
