We all know that lemons are good for us, but do you really know WHY?

After harvesting yet another batch of wonderful Meyer lemons from my backyard trees, I decided it was time to explore the therapeutic and medicinal values of this important and versatile fruit. So here’s my contribution to your lemon knowledge:

Morning Stiffness?

Low back pain and stiffness when you get up in the morning could be a sign of dehydration.

TIP:  Take a 12 ounce glass of water to bed with you -- drink the WHOLE thing and IMMEDIATELY lie down (before setting the glass down) -- this is the important part!

If you get up during the night, repeat the process.

I've done this many…

Help for Eyestrain

We all spend far too much time doing close-up work, generally staring at the computer screen all day, and our eyes are paying the price.

Our eyes are meant to be used for "all seeing" - both near and far, but with our lifestyles and technological gadgets, we wind up being out of balance by using our "near" ability way too much - at the expense of our "far"…

What is Strep A?

An abnormal rapid strep test:  An abnormal or positive strep test means that strep bacteria are present.

A positive test result does not distinguish those people with an active strep infection from those who are carriers of strep bacteria but actually have a viral infection (rather than a bacterial one).…

Group B Strep and pregnant

‎"Interestingly, the Cochrane Collection reviewed the evidence in 2009 and recommended no treatment for GBS in labor in low-risk situations. You may want to discuss your baby’s risk with the midwives, and whether they still recommend treatment in your situation if you test positive.

The Dirty Life

I just finished reading The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball.  What a wonderful short read.  Great for your summer reading.  I loved the authors descriptions of food!  Just made you want to start farming so you could make the deliciousness for yourself!  Oh yeah, I do a little farming myself, will have to try a couple of the dishes she elaborates on in the book.  :-)…

Green Pepper/Potato Frittata

Dice up one green bell pepper and one onion, stir fry for just a bit until soft.  Dice one potato into about 1/4-1/2 inch chunks, and boil until knife tender.  Let these cool just a bit.  Meanwhile, add 10 large eggs, 1/4 cup Romano cheese, 1/2 cup crumbled goat… Continue

Saving Seeds

Do you all save seeds from year to year?  I have, but only a little, like last year I saved okra, tomato, pepper, and watermelon seeds.  This year my goal is to save so many more seeds.  I mean the seeds are out there, sitting in my garden, I just need to take the time to harvest them.

Now my peas are dying off, just too hot.  The peas were great while they lasted.  It has taken me a few years to have successful peas.  Being from the north, I was not used to planting things in Feb, I… Continue

Green Smoothies, Fun AND Nutritious

I was just reading another blog about smoothies.  On this blog there were two categories of smoothies,  one was just for fun, and in that you couldn't taste the vegetables, the other was nutritious and wouldn't contain things like honey.  Of course there was more of a description, but those two things stuck out at me.  I don't believe that for something to be nutritious you have to taste the vegetables.  Or that not tasting the vegetables is somehow less nutritious.  Also I believe honey to be… Continue

Pasta~Pea Salad

My shelling peas are ready for harvest.  This is the first year, since moving to NC, that I have been able to grow peas.  I planted mid-February, and now the shelling peas are ready for harvest.  My first bunch yesterday, and, in total, I had about 2 cups of peas.  I WANT MORE!  I love peas.  I want enough to eat now and freeze for later.  I do have about the same amount left on the plants, they need to fill out more.  But the heat will take them first.  My plants are starting to die in the… Continue

Food allergies and healing gut/inflammation....Cultured foods?

I got a food allergy test last month, and it came back with High intolerance to Yogurt and Swiss Cheese. Moderate reaction(?) to Brewer's Yeast, Buttermilk, American Cheese, and Mozerella. Low reaction to Baker's yeast, Egg white, Goat Milk, and white mushroom.

I don't break out or have any noticeable reaction, except, I'm constantly consuming a variety of those. The yogurt and cheeses make me sad, ok angry! I love Cheese and Dairy of all sorts. I don't know why regular milk didn't… Continue

Placental Encapsulation

I've wanted to have some healthy placenta for about three years now.   Finding someone who'll share their placenta AND who has a pristine diet and health is another thing...

My wonderful friend offered to share some of her placenta when she birthed recently in exchange for the gift of preparing it for her in the traditional Chinese way.  (I'll include instructions below.)  I want to encourage women to consider embracing the benefits of placenta consumption…

Making Sprouted Wheat Flour

I'm sure this is old hat for many but it's my first attempt so I thought I'd write it here and share some pictures as I go.

I started with some organic wheat berries.   I soaked them overnight and then put them in a large colander lined with cheese cloth.   I rinsed 3 times a day and in 2 days they were ready to dehydrate.

So today I spread them on 6 dehydrator trays and they will dehydrated today.  It will probably take about 8…

Irradiated "organics"???

Talk to me about irradiated foods! What about whole foods, "organic" foods, are they irradiated too? I've never seen Anything labeled with this information!

Apparently, they've been irradiating wheat flour (since 1963). And meat & poultry since the '90s. It is perfectly safe according to this "fact sheet" prepared... by the UW Food Irradiation Education Group - (an obviously objective…

Scalp Dermatitis / Psoriasis

I have had a small patch of psoriasis on my scalp for years but since the birth of my second son it has spread to where I now have small patches all over! Its terrible I hate it! and the amount of dnadruff it causes is horrible...

I have tried lots of things to help it go away all have helped a little but none have actually cleared it completely those things being: Krill oil supplements, Vit b12 supplements, using pure coconut oil on my head and in my smoothies and pouring…
