"Is water kefir normally more yeasty than kombucha? This is my second time trying out water kefir, and the yeasty-ness is bothering me--taste wise. These are new grains, re-hydrated, on their third cycle. Will it evolve or is this water water Kefir…"

What is happening this week...

Change is hard. Not impossible though. I am gearing up to clean up the kitchen and our meals. I need to. How many years of "needing to"? Maybe 3 years of conscious awareness of needing to, and at least 20 of carefree indulgence and reckless consumption (and stress). Thankfully this time around, my husband is also ready so I have his support. I think it helps tremendously not to have to do this by yourself, in a family environment. Watching Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, you'll note that those who…See More

Sauerkraut!

Just made a batch of sauerkraut, and despite my initial concerns of it being to salty, it is just right! Whooo hooo! Got Kraut!I can't believe the probiotic tubs of it sell for $5 in our co-op. Sheesh. It's just cabbage! I used some of the brine from the co-op batch to get some of the lactobacillus in. Not sure if that is useful or not. I was sort of thinking along the lines of yogurt making.I tasted it today, after adding some dill and one shaved clove of garlic. It is addicting. I could eat…See More

Profile Information

How did you learn about the "Heal Thyself" site?
Oh goodness, I think from a facebook posting from a friend, or I found it trying to find more holistic, anti-inflammatory information.
What does "holistic" mean to you?
The whole body, and your whole life, is the cause of health-a system. Fixing one part may mean adjusting and repairing other parts. Finding healthful balance within your whole self.
How long have you been interested in holistic living?
The last two years, since I've been in decline mentally and physically. Strangely I grew up with parents who were healthy and holistic, some how I got off track and embraced/over indulged in the poorer side of American eating habits.

Change

Sometimes changes takes years. I can see I've been circling the healing diet for several years, waiting for something to help make it easier to abstain from certain foods. I've used my role as mom (chef), finances, life stress, etc to avoid change: "Nobody will eat this, I'll eat alone all the time, I'll have to cook two meals (mine and theirs), I don't have money for all the veg I'd go through, I can't handle this right now!" Or my husband will come home with chocolate cake or boba…

Food allergies and healing gut/inflammation....Cultured foods?

I got a food allergy test last month, and it came back with High intolerance to Yogurt and Swiss Cheese. Moderate reaction(?) to Brewer's Yeast, Buttermilk, American Cheese, and Mozerella. Low reaction to Baker's yeast, Egg white, Goat Milk, and white mushroom.

I don't break out or have any noticeable reaction, except, I'm constantly consuming a variety of those. The yogurt and cheeses make me sad, ok angry! I love Cheese and Dairy of all sorts. I don't know why regular milk didn't… Continue
