Did you know that it’s estimated about 80% of people between the age of 11 and 30 suffer with acne breakouts from time to time? And that beyond that, more and more people every year are suffering with acne into their 40s and 50s?
Well, although it’s nice to know I’m not alone, it’s hard to say if I take any pleasure in company when it comes a problem like acne. To some people acne might not seem like a big deal, but to those who have experienced it persistently, it can be totally devastating to the self esteem and I would never wish it upon anyone.
Believe me, I know that dreaded feeling when you find yet another bump on your face that you just know is going to turn into a massive volcanic spotlight adorning your chin (how lovely). I suffered with mild to moderate acne starting in middle school and it all came to a “head” when I was 23 and my face suddenly exploded into severe acne everywhere across my face.
It was by far the worst time of my life. I was so embarrassed and ashamed. I stopped wanting to leave the house, and I felt anxiety that I never had before. I had one mission: get rid of it as fast as possible.
However, I didn’t want to use conventional acne treatments. Due to my incessant internet research on the topic, I had realized that mainstream treatments like benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, birth control pills, and Accutane only cover up the problem, but don’t really solve it. Plus, they often harm your body and make it more likely for acne to come back in the future once you’ve finished taking them, even if they do work in the short term.
So I decided I was going to go natural and heal my skin the holistic way, which meant becoming a healthier person and supporting my body with the essential nutrients it needed so that it could heal itself. It seemed the reasonable choice, since I never ever wanted my acne to come back. I needed to get to the root cause and erase it.
So, I changed my diet to healthier foods. I started really paying attention to my stress levels. I started exercising more. I got more fresh air and sunlight. I made sure to get lots of sleep. And I threw away my harsh cleansers and face washes and switched to completely natural, organic ingredients.
And you know what? It worked. I completely healed my skin from the severe acne, and now I rarely ever get acne anymore at all. Plus my skin generally just looks a lot brighter and more even since I stopped using all those harsh acne products and learned to work with my skin, not against it.
