It is cheap and simple to make whole food probiotics at home.

Dairy-free kefir, or any type of dairy could be made into kefir. And the kefir grains reproduce and you will be giving them away to friends and strangers in no time, lol.
Check the Sharing Cultures forum for members who'll share culture starters.
Refrigerated bottled probiotics generally have fewer probiotics than active live cultures yogurt at the store. Making yogurt isn't difficult either. Just need a starter, and they are inexpensive also.

You could order dehydrated kefir grains from Cultures for Health. I believe that she ships even in the summer. They cost about $15, and she sends instructions. http://www.culturesforhealth.com/Kefir-Grains-c37/

But, here is more about making milk kefir and water kefir.

Here is Probiotics 101. Basically, any homemade probiotic has more beneficial microbials than anything you can buy in a bottle.

I have water grains but would love some milk grains. I am in Florida and it is still hot here. If you let me know when you begin shipping them I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

It'll be cooler here in about a month and I'll post. I have a LOT of water kefir grains. My milk kefir grains are dwindling as I don't make it frequently and give a lot away locally. But, hopefully will have more soon.

Hi Pat, do you post to the UK and what would cover the cost ? cheers
Comment by Pat Robinson on September 15, 2010 at 9:02am
Jennifer, I have hydrated grains and apparently customs frowns on liquids sent through the mail. Additionally, they do not survive as well for long periods as dehydrated.

Cultures for Health
ships internationally, from my understanding and she sends dehydrated grains and instructions. It costs about $16 + s/h.

Did you check the Sharing Cultures forum here? I thought I recalled someone sharing grains in the UK.

Are you still shipping any water or dairy grains? I'm really wanting to try both.

I have access to water grains but am interested in milk grains as well.  Please let me know when you have some available to ship.

I have some grains that a friend gave me that she says are milk grains, but I haven't successfully made milk kefir with them, I don't think.  OTOH, I have never had milk kefir, so I don't know what I am supposed to get!  If I could get some feedback on the kefir, I could share grains if they are milk grains.

I fermented it for over 24 hours, and it separated but didn't thicken.  It has a curdled texture, and is very sour.  Does this mean these are really water grains?

Hi, I'm Nicole. I live in Kansas and I'm looking for milk kefir grains or water kefir grains. If anyone has any to share, I would be so appreciative! Thank you kindly. Blessings.
