I'm not sold on supplementing vit D3.

There are many variations of vitamin D. Many are natural and others are produced in laboratories.

We can get many MORE derivatives of vit D from food sources and the sun. We can get 10,000-20,000 IU from 30 minutes of sunshine.

And supping more than 2000 IU a day has concerns with kidney stones in a segment of the population. And D3 supplements only ONE of the 3000 vit D derivatives.

Don't get me started on how this "deficiency" grew out of the supplement industry's NEW ability to manufacture and sell D3. And how we had a "deficiency" of D2 when that was all we could measure and manufacture.

Not to mention the co-factors that the body needs in order to utilize vitamin D properly. They are:

* magnesium
* zinc
* vitamin K2
* boron
* a tiny amount of vitamin A

And that we only use up some 1000-5000 IU (with stress) per day. I trust Mother Nature more than I trust a supplement manufacture to know what my body needs. One day of sunshine a week is 4-10 days worth of vit D, under stress.

A couple of 30 minute exposures and some food sources, especially fermented CLO and cold water fatty fish and I feel much healthier than taking vit D3 manufactured in a lab, shipped across the country and sitting on a grocery shelf for "nutrients".

Pat: I was recently blood lab tested and showed very low. The lab was ordered by a DO who has a clinic using many alternative modalities and bio-identical hormones. The recommended me to megadose D3 and get retested. My test was mid-summer when I had been getting plenty of sun. I did not feel particularly stressed at the time of the test, in fact, I felt on the upswing.

The blood levels test ONE derivative of vit D. There are about 3000 derivatives of vit D. I would not supplement one derivative of a vitamin - the other vit D derivatives are thus imbalanced. In nature, vitamins and nutrients occur in usable forms in combinations naturally. For instance, antibiotics imbalance the system. And we can measure antibiotic blood levels, but that doesn't mean we have a deficiency of an antibiotic when measured it is measured as "low".

Imbalances are caused by high dose supplementation without regard to natural sources which occur with multiple nutrient constituents holistically.

I would focus on increasing food sources of vit D along with the co-factors which impact vit D utilization in the body. Measuring circulating vit D levels does not indicate that the vit D is usable in the body.

Foods high in vit D: Cod Liver Oil, Lard, Atlantic Herring, Eastern Oysters,  Catfish, Skinless Sardines, Mackerel, Smoked Chinook Salmon, Sturgeon Roe, Shrimp, Egg Yolk, Butter, Lamb Liver, Beef Tallow, Pork Liver, Beef Liver, Beef Tripe, Beef Kidney, Chicken Livers, Small Clams, Blue Crab, Crayfish/Crawdads, Northern Lobster. Not listed here are insects; some are very high in vitamin D.

Would Bison liver also be high in vitamin D? I am on an elimination diet and can't consume dairy, beef, or seafood.

I would believe, yes, that bison liver would be comparable to 100% grass-fed beef liver, assuming it is not grain-fed.

Do the chicken livers have to be pastured as well? Are there any other food sources (besides insects) that aren't seafood or egg yolks? I can't do seafood or egg yolks or beef right now.

I buy pasture-raised (or organic) chicken liver and 100% grass-fed beef liver. I don't think there is a grass-fed chicken product.

Pork is almost always given supplemental GMO-grain, unfortunately. I wouldn't choose pork liver, myself.
