Eat beets. If they turn your urine pink/red, then you have low stomach acid. Stomach acid is a very important first step in digestion. Without enough, you can't absorb B12, and you have trouble absorbing zinc as well as several other nutrients. If you don't have adequate stomach acid, proteins aren't broken down properly, and so they can cause trouble in the small intestine and/or get absorbed whole into the bloodstream.

Gluten and casein are famous for being addictive because they form opiod-like substances. Stomach acid is necessary to prevent them from becoming opiods.

Histamine helps trigger the release of stomach acid. Histamine is found in several foods, especially ferments, so pile on another reason to eat ferments with every meal. Adequate zinc is also necessary to produce stomach acid (remember what's not absorbed well without it?).

Yes, the kidneys. Didn't like that class either. Learned it. Passed the exams. Went into cardio-thorasic nursing. LOL I don't want to learn this stuff. (whine whine)

I ordered some ph urine test strips. I'm curious about your comment about adrenal fatigue and urine ph. I'll have to go unschool myself about that now. I love Google University. ;-)

I did the test and no pink/red urine! But I ate the beets at night b/4 bed--could that have changed the outcome? (I was chopping some to ferment and ate them raw--maybe ate a total of one big raw beet--was that enough?)

TIA!

Lauren :)
I believe that was enough quantity. Generally, folks see the pink pee within a few hours. Not sure if the overnight duration has any impact.

What we've discerned is that Pink Pee indicates inadequate HCl; but non-pink pee doesn't mean anything one way or the other about your HCl. So, if you get pink pee, it is a useful tool to hint at eating more fermented foods, basically. But, since you already do that, I'd doubt that you'd get pink pee. If you did, that would be more of a concern. Follow?

I had pink pee. Then I stopped having pink pee. And I realized I'd been eating more fermented foods. Then we were researching about pink pee and beets and found the information about HCl.

Here is a thread at MDC with some discussion of the variables involved. http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=1050298&h...

Delighted to hear. I'll share the link around. It sounds interesting. Is is tart, bitter, mushy, tangy?

Pat
Sounds wonderful. I'm trying to get up the nerve to ferment my own!

Pat, the pathways to happiness and sleep link didn't work, do you have another? sleep is a huge issue for me right now.
also, is asparagus pee related to this?

Asparagus pee has been discussed. I believe it had to do with sulfur.

Well, I just found this from from WhoMe (Shannon)

from tuberose:
Quote:
Those with a poorly functioning sulfoxidation detoxification pathway are more sensitive to sulfur-containing drugs and foods containing sulfur or sulfite additives.

Apparently B6 is related to sleep and stinky pee. (also b5, from what I gleamed)

Pat..

Adding lemon to your drinking water helps to alkalize the body. It is paradoxical. But, helps with detox. Caution with mercury fillings and nursing.

I just finished nursing... and found that I have mercury in my system through hair testing. I am looking to detox but what do you mean by this above? Is it that you should not detox while nursing because the mercury could move into your milk instead of out of your body? I want to learn more about this.
Yes, caution about detoxing while nursing, and/or if one has mercury issues.

Here is more info about detox safety.

Also, I wouldn't detox mercury/candida within 18 months before ttc. Use special caution if mercury is still present in your mouth. Here is more about candida imbalances.

How do you feel about going to a kinesiologist for detoxing? I am currently going to one in my home town (buffalo, ny). In addition to helping with my detoxing.. I am eating raw fermented kim chie and saurkraut before every meal, adding a bit of coconut oil to my eggs every morning, drinking homemade chicken broth, drinking raw milk and making yogurt and kefir from my raw milk, and eating raw or slightly cooked vegetables from your list alkaline list (blueberries, pumpkin, broccoli, beets, tomatoes). I also picked up some milk thistle tea this morning. Starting to drink lemon juice in my water as well. Anything else you would add to my detox regime? And thank you for this forum, I have been reading it every night for a while now. This is where I came up with my regime.
