Q & A with Darcey Blue

  •  What circumstances led you to your current health and wellness mission?

Even as a child I was enamored of the plants growing in my back yard. I was always trying to learn which weeds I could eat, and which I could use to heal.  As I grew up, and moved through my life, the most constant source of healing and wisdom that I found was through my connection with nature.  Taking walks in the woods in college and begging for help from an animal ally, rooting myself in the landscape of the desert I call home by watching and recording the cycles of the moon, the seasons, the plants,  by learning about the plants around me, and by sitting in nature, alone, when I was in pain, or when I sought guidance.

Nature has never failed to restore my spirits, heal my aching heart, or give me some vital piece of wisdom that has allowed me to learn, grow and find joy and beauty and magic in a world that can at times feel devoid of those things.

The more I have worked on my own healing through nature, the more I have felt deeply called, by the land, by spirit, by the plants to share these gifts with others.  They are there for all of us, but the journey to reconnection and open hearted awareness can be challenging.  I am absolutely committed to seeing this world transform into a beautiful, sacred, heartfelt, and healthy place- for all beings.  The plants are my bridgeThe plants are my guides.  The plants are my allies.

  •   What do you wish more people knew about health?

My wish for all people is that they recognize that the path to physical and emotional healing includes connecting with the sacred.  The Sacred isn’t some idea that the church has a monopoly on.  Treating ourselves as Sacred is absolutely part of the path of healing.  If you can see and feel yourself as THAT sacred, you will make choices for your own healing and highest good.  If you can see other life as sacred (plant and animal) you will make choices about food, living situations, and purchases that support the well-being of all life.

Its not about what is “right” or “wrong,”  we are all unique individuals with different needs and situations, no one can say what is right for all people, but connecting in with our hearts, our spirit, that which we value and hold sacred is a path to healthy living in and of itself.

  •   What has been hardest for you on this path of natural health?

Extremism.  People get an idea in their head, weather learned from a teacher, or from their own personal experience, and then assume or believe it is the “right” way for all people.  I’m very tired of others attacking each other over which diet “is right or ethical” or which healing modality it the “best.”

Some of my own journey has been in overcoming this idea of “right’ vs “wrong”, and the self reproach or punishment we dole out to ourselves or others if we do something perceived as “wrong.”  We could lose the guilt and blame, and ask ourselves “What is right for me, in this moment, what would bring me into balance and peace in this moment?”    Sometimes it might be a 3 day veggie juice fast, and sometimes it might be to indulge in a bowl of ice cream- without going to extremes, without self judgement or punishment, or trying to convince the whole world that is the answer for all time for all people.  Life and individuals are so complex.  Things are always changing.  And that is good.

  • What three natural alternatives could individuals add to their life to improve their personal health?

Plant medicines - on a daily basis
, not just when you are sick or unwell, but as health promoting and nourishing daily practices.  The plants are full of nutrients, antioxidants and energetic healing properties which we can use regularly to improve health.  Nettles infusions, elderberry and rosehip infused vinegar, or daily decoctions of adaptogen roots and mushrooms like astragalus and reishi.

Time outside everyday - getting fresh air, moving the body, seeing the green growing things, watching the clouds race, appreciating the sunset, tending a garden with baby seeds sprouting.  We’ve got to connect with the living world around us for our sanity and physical well-being.  No matter where you live- country or city, you can find a tree in a park, a dandelion in the crack of the pavement, or grow a plant in your windowsill.

I absolutely think it is necessary to spend time out of civilized places and in wild nature, but daily contact with nature is so healing, however small it may seem.  Praise and give gratitude for those things.

Allow yourself to take in the magic, for just a moment, of sun on skin, or the smell of a flower, and the sacredness of life existing all around us.

Eating Seasonally -  Our bodies, no matter how we’ve separated ourselves from the raw experience of living on the land and depending on only what we gather for food, we are still very much creatures of the earth and affected by the seasonal cycles and rhythms of nature.

Eating a frozen smoothie in January isn’t really aligned with the season of winter.  (Unless you live in tropics- always keeping in mind your location as well as season is important too.)  Its important for us to tune into our intuitive wisdom about what the Earth is doing around us, and what our bodies are calling for.

Eating in tune with the season is one of the best ways to begin to tune into that and feel it in our physical body.
