I was wondering whether anybody can help figure out what is going on in my body:
About a year ago I did a live blood cell test and, among other things, it revealed that my body was quite acidic.
The doctor gave me alkaline, which I took every day when the test strip showed high acidity levels.

I cut out all refined sugars and kept testing. It got a little better and after some months I stopped testing and taking the Alkaline.


Now I got another roll of the test strips and find that the level is even more acidic than it ever was!
I'm eating a very healthy diet, at least so I thought:
Vegetarian, almost vegan, with some consumption of local raw cheese and local pastured eggs.
Green smoothie (kale, carrots, other greens etc.) every day. Water kefir
every day. Lots of fruits and vegetables, mostly self-made whole grain
spelt bread. My weakness are sweets, and even though I never use refined
sugar in my bakings, I still consume quite a lot of maple syrup/honey.

I also have a zinc deficiency (shows as white spots on my nails).
Could it be that I have too little stomach acid which interferes with zinc absorbency?
Could these two things be related?
I'm at my wits end and don't know what to do or what to change.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Zinc is used for the enzyme that makes stomach acid.  And when your body makes stomach acid, it alkalizes the rest of your body.  That same enzyme is used in the kidneys to help regulate pH.

I'd consider a few things - ferments with meals can help increase stomach acid, which should improve zinc absorption.  Second, it might be worth a shot to see if going totally gluten free has any effect.

I'm in the exact some boat. I've thought about this for quite some time as it really freaked me out at first. I think that your kidneys are just doing a superior job of filtering out the acid. You probably run more acid than most due to biochemical individuality. Are you Irish or Northern European? I think we tend to be more acidic due to higher homocysteine levels. Do you know your MTHFR status? I believe one of the most popular polymorphisms is related to that. The way to deal with this is to optimize your folate intake with B12 and focus on opening up your detox pathways. We need to becareful about the sun because of our acidity. I learned this recently. I moved to the beach this year and spent a lot of time in the sun playing volleyball and being in the ocean. I noticed that despite never burning (I only spent time outside after 2pm and never burned) I still developed many freckles and brown spots. I believe this is the sun pulling the acid out of the skin and the darkened pigment is a result of this. Depending on our overall health this can lead to skin cancers. Anyway, I am just wondering if these things are also true for you. If so there might be some kind ethnic/genetic component to it that we have to work to optimize. I'm curious to learn more about this as well.

 

 

Also, have you gotten recent bloodwork to see about your kidney levels? Like your BUN and creatanine? I only mention this because I had been feeling a burning feeling in my kidneys that would come or go intermittently and I had always wondered about that as related to high acid. I never had stones or anything, but would notice sometimes I would get a cramping/burning sensation in my kidneys following a meal or coffee. Anyway, if your kidney levels are normal then your body doing is a great job of dealing with your acid load and you should consider this to be a GOOD thing that your urine is acidic -- it is better that you urinate out the acid than have it stay in your organs and blood stream. What did your live blood cell analysis show about the acid in the blood?
