~ Food Has Power ~
As many others, I am new and needing a little help. I have a niece who had a baby on Dec. 1, 2012. He was 9lb, 9oz and appeared to be a healthy baby. But, shortly after his delivery, they realized he wasn't getting enough oxygen so they took him to the NICU for oxygen. After realizing that wasn't working, they did some test and found out he had a heart defect that had never been detected. At 5 days old, Nolan had to have open heart surgery. He had what is known as "Transposition of The Great Arteries". Needless to say this was quite a shock to these brand new first time parents and the rest of the family as well. At one point after surgery, he had some infection in his chest so they opened the incision and place a vacuum pump to suction the infection out. It didn't work so they had to open him back up about a week later and found that the wires on his sternum had come loose and that's what was causing him such great pain. They repaired that and he went home on the 27th with a good report. The problem is, he is having stomach issues now. His mommy is and has been pumping and feeding him breast milk, but they were also prescribed some protein for him. When he was having so many issues, they took him off of the protein because his stomach couldn't handle it. They have never suggested or implied that he needs some probiotics (surprise!). I told my niece that since he started off with so many complications and was most likely on antibiotics that he should have some probiotics to restore the flora in his gut. That she should probably get on something and since he's getting her breast milk that they would both benefit from it. The problem is, I really don't know what to recommend to her. There are many different forms and brands of probiotics and I really don't know what's the best for them to take. Can someone please help answer this? I realize there is homemade stuff too, but just don't know enough yet to help. She is interested and want's to know too! Thanks!
