MTHFR activates folate.
With two copies of C677T or one of C677T and one of A1298C, the activation process is slowed down, so you need twice as much.
Interventions include supplemental folate (start with 5-MTHF form, then look further if that doesn't work) and avoiding folic acid. There are also workarounds - betaine and other methyl donors can serve the same purpose.
Naturally occurring food folate is pre-activated. Cool, huh?
Symptoms to look for here are those involved in high homocysteine:
midline defects and neural tube defects
