~ Food Has Power ~
Hi, I've just joined but I've been researching and implementing diet and health changes in my family for the past few months... slowly.
I am 25 years old and have one child, 17 months, that I am still nursing. Before him I had one confirmed miscarriage, one other possible miscarriage. Because I was very anxious to be a mother and trying to be as healthy and do everything "right" for my baby, I had been on prenatal vitamins for about a year before I conceived him, as well as a calcium supplement, choline supplement, EPA/DHA, probiotics, Vitamin D, and possibly other supplements that I can't remember. I was trying to do everything healthy, but little did I know our society's idea of healthy is very different than what truly is. I was eating lots of whole grains (fortified, of course), very little, if any, animal products (meat, eggs, etc.), lots of dairy, gluten, sugar, etc. I had one course of antibiotics (Macrobid) during the first trimester of my pregnancy with my son for what they thought was a UTI, it turned out to be kidney stones though. The rest of my pregnancy was pretty uneventful. Birth was quick and easy, natural hospital birth. The recovery postpartum was the absolute hardest though. I bled heavily for 2 months or longer, I was sooooo tired I couldn't even get up or move, I was pale and weak, I was eating total processed junk food because I had no energy to cook or take care of myself, my son screamed and cried all the time, we had thrush and I had an oversupply issue, I had black spots in my eyes/vision problems and heart palpitations and lots of weakness. I had baby blues and lots of anxiety and sleeplessness. And rage. Lots of anger and rage over everything.
It's taken me over a year since the birth of my son to get back to feeling normal and functional again. I've started heavily researching health and food since then to help my health problems and figure out what went wrong with my first pregnancy/postpartum/breastfeeding experiences. I've recently learned that my son has a tongue tie, lip tie and sacral dimple. He also has dental problems. His front teeth came in with yellow/brownish lines on them along the gum line and they've been there ever since. They haven't really gotten worse in the year since he's had them, but they haven't gotten better. His teeth also seem weak and are chipping. (After some research, I'm thinking that his dental problems might be contributed to the antibiotics I took during pregnancy). His tongue tie/lip tie/sacral dimple, I contribute to my prenatal vitamins and diet before and during pregnancy. He's also had pooping issues since he was born. At first it was green and mucousy. Then it became very infrequent, every 10 days to 2 weeks and very stinky even though he was exclusively breastfed. After he started solids, it became even more infrequent and even worse smelling. And it was full of undigested food. He was also very bloated and had a hard tummy. I took him off of all grains and gluten and his digestion issues went away. He poops pretty regularly now, usually every day or second day and his bloating is completely gone.
My health issues are pretty minimal but I would still love to fix them. I have acne, weak/dry/brittle hair, horizontal ridges in most of my fingernail, some stomach upset/digestion issues, headaches, and low energy and sleep problems. I have one filling and am not taking any medications or supplements.
After lots of research and time, I feel like a whole foods and traditional foods approach is what feels right to me. I have recently started my family on whole foods probiotics (Bubbies sauerkraut and pickles), Brazil nuts, dairy free, gluten free, grain free (for now, may add some sprouted grains later), green smoothies, organic grass fed meats and eggs, healthy fats (ghee, coconut oil, olive oil), fermented cod liver oil, starting nettles infusions today, bone broths, and everything else I've read about here and on mothering.com.
My husband and I had wanted to start trying to conceive again in September. This is starting to make me nervous that I haven't had enough time to get healthy and September is so close now. I want to make sure I have all the nutrients and vitamins/minerals in my body from the whole foods before getting pregnant. Since I just started this eating lifestyle, would it be too soon to get pregnant next month? Should I give my body more time to heal and replenish?
Thanks for any advice :)
