~ Food Has Power ~
My not quite 5 year old son is already being tested at school for services. I have long suspected he has sensory integration issues, I'm thinking possibly dislexia as well (beginning to read and sees "my" and "me" and says "am"). He's easily bored/short attention span, easily frustrated, impulsive, and highly excitable. But what puzzles me most is that it's not consistent. Some days he seems like a very bright normal little boy and other days he seems like he has auditory delays and profound processing issues.--It's more of a sliding scale than an on/off switch I guess. Things that he may excel at one day may be "too hard" another day. His school work shows the changes too. Yesterday his teacher sent classwork home with him because when it was time to do the assignment, he just kept messing around and rolling on the floor. (He has to sit with buffer space around him when it's floor time because he moves around so much and with little awareness of his extremities that he ends up hitting the other children). He is super friendly and loves, even craves interaction with other children, but he isn't responsive to normal social cues when he bothers others, frequently touching too much and generally not keeping body space.
Another behavior that comes and goes is constant nonsense noises (usually machine or other similar sound effects). He doesn't do it everyday, but when he does, he doesn't stop and it's extremely loud and disruptive, even at home. He sucks on things relentlessly only when he is in this odd behavior. I know he's really bad off when he intentionally runs into walls. He is also unresponsive to directions and generally uncooperative, but loves to help when he is not in this state.
I have noticed that these behaviors seem to be tied to physical discomfort, but he is so sensitive that it could be he is coming down with a cold, it's a bad air day, he had a restless night (he still wakes up and joins me in bed every single night), he has a stomach ache, etc. He rarely complains of physical discomfort so when his behavior starts to get wacky, I have to ask and he may or may not give me a clear answer since he is deeply entrenched in the fantasy play stage and is caught up in imaginary scenarios most of the time.
Anyway, I have seen no clear cut sign of allergies, but I do suspect them. However I don't know what to do about it. He was definitely collicy during infancy until I cut dairy from my diet. (didn't know about raw milk at the time, but was exclusively BF'ed until nearly 8 mos. then continued until age 3) So I was hoping raw dairy would help him, but so far no change. Before we started Feingold (removing artificial additives) this behavior was constant. We removed salicylates for a couple months but saw no change, so we added them back.
I strongly suspect it's some cognative issues being compounded by physical something, but I don't know what to do.
