MTHFR and pregnancy

Most people don't realize the difference between folic acid and folate, since they believe they are both 'the same vitamin.' It is 'old school' to supplement high doses of folic acid with MTHFR as it is preferentially absorbed and excess circulating folic acid has detrimental effects on a developing fetus, past the first trimester.…

High Cholesterol

Im so confused. I rarely eat meat at all and if I do it is grass fed or wild. I eat lots of fruits and vegetables (10-15 servings per day), water is my  only drink, I eat only organic and grow alot of my fruits and veggies. I only shop farmers markets and stay out of grocery stores. I prepare all my own food, I never eat boxed, canned or fast foods. I take only the highest quality vitamins, I dont smoke or drink, I do no drugs of any kind what so ever and guess what? I have high cholesterol of… Continue

Drug-resistant bacteria and antibiotics

I have a few dead horses which I choose to beat. The MYTH and FEAR associated with discontinuing UNNECESSARY antibiotics, in the event of improperly prescribed (viral illness), or excessive diarrhea (antibiotic induced diarrhea-which could be dangerous C. difficile overgrowth), is one of them.

  • There is no "rule" or "obligation" to…

For the Love of Fermented Foods

[Guest blog post from Ruth Almon of Ruth's Real Food.]

The first time I heard that people from traditional cultures eat a small amount of fermented foods at each meal, the information passed right by me. That’s fine for them, but I wasn’t about to start eating kimchi and sauerkraut with every meal.

The second time I learned about the wonderful properties of fermented foods, I was intrigued. It seemed…

Fun in the Sun

It's summer time and that means lots of fun in the sun.   However there is a lot of confusion out there about sunscreen, sun exposure and how to protect yourself from sunburn and cancer while still getting adequate vitamin D.

You may be wondering if you should wear sunscreen, what brands, or have questions about skin cancer and vitamin D deficiency.

Let's first look at some important information.

1). You NEED sun exposure WITHOUT sunscreen for your…

Valerian - Your "Sleepy" Friend

If you suffer from insomnia or restless sleep, Valerian can be your friend.

This herb's ability to produce a deep, satisfying sleep is amazing!  The active ingredients found in Valerian relax the smooth muscle tissue and depress (a good thing here) the central nervous system. While Valerian works similar to prescription sleep-aids, its draw is that it's not…

10 Steps to Wellness

1. Let food be thy medicine – Eat whole, real, unprocessed foods. As Micheal Pollan says “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Eating as much of your foods in their raw, whole, unprocessed, organic state as possible is critical. If you are not able to obtain all your foods in an organic state, be sure at least, to only consume animal foods that…

Morning Stiffness?

Low back pain and stiffness when you get up in the morning could be a sign of dehydration.

TIP:  Take a 12 ounce glass of water to bed with you -- drink the WHOLE thing and IMMEDIATELY lie down (before setting the glass down) -- this is the important part!

If you get up during the night, repeat the process.

I've done this many…

Help for Eyestrain

We all spend far too much time doing close-up work, generally staring at the computer screen all day, and our eyes are paying the price.

Our eyes are meant to be used for "all seeing" - both near and far, but with our lifestyles and technological gadgets, we wind up being out of balance by using our "near" ability way too much - at the expense of our "far"…
