Eczema, Steroid Creme Alternatives?

An old timey solution we used was Burow's Solution. It is Aluminum Acetate resulting from the reaction of

Calcium acetate and Aluminum Sulfate. It is buffered. I imagine it is the sulfate which helps, similar to Epsom salts which is magnesium sulfate. …

Kombucha- Candida- Mercury Issues

Kombucha has S. boulardii which displaces and replaces candida albicans. Candida binds with mercury to store it out of circulation. If one has/had mercury fillings and detoxes poorly, they are likely to have candida.

Food pH : The Chemistry of the Food We Eat and Why It Matters

We all know that fresh, organic vegetables and fruits are GOOD for us, and sugary, fatty, processed foods are BAD. But why are the GOOD foods good and the BAD foods bad? A lot of it comes down to acids and bases: pH.

In chemistry, pH (short for potentiometric hydrogen ion concentration) is a…

The Paper Towel-less Challenge

Who doesn't appreciate the convenience of the paper towel? Rip one off, wipe up a spill, a face, dry hands you are always washing, use as a 'plate' to serve sandwiches, and heck they are even "microwaveable". Ok, that one I added just for comedy sake, because haven't paper towels always been microwaveable? Ahhh, the ingenuity of marketing. If you have a list of luxuries, paper towels should be on that list. Why? Because they are unnecessary, expensive, and impact our environment in a big,…

Starting the Garden - Soil Improvement

Growing food in the best chemical-free soil will give you the most healthful food that has more nutrients than grocery store produce. Even if you don't have time to garden on a large scale, everyone should grow a few pots of something to eat!

Our garden is in its second year. I did not expect much the first year - I thought it would take a couple years to turn that neglected, clay-filled pasture into good garden soil, especially since we were not going to bust our butts over…

Calcium and electrolytes

A resolution?

The main electrolytes in the blood are calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. And then there's the water variable.

It's pretty common for people to report high calcium symptoms when starting vitamin K. What if the increased production of osteocalcin (from the A/D/K combo) increased the calcium concentration of my blood, which made me suddenly really thirsty and dehydrated? Would my skin showed it first?

I was crazy thirsty all day yesterday and today.… Continue

balancing vitamin A

Things are changing

Remember, I started with decent vitamin D levels, and now I've increased my vitamin K, in the form of HVBO, and it's helping with fatigue. It appears my days of exhaustion are very highly correlated with vitamin A intake. Including today. I'm thinking the A is using up the K in ways that don't give me more energy. Like mineralizing bone and tooth enamel.

This morning, the palms of my hands seemed extra dry and almost chapped. Mostly around the edges and on… Continue

Vitamin K, fatigue, and mineralization

My next experiment:

I think I have decent/good vitamin D levels, based on testing and fairly high dose supplementing. I think I have woefully low vitamin A levels, based on the lack of preformed vit A in my diet, and my aversion to cod liver oil. I was assuming that my vitamin K2 levels were decent, based on the massive quantity of Kerrygold butter that I consume.

With my fatigue experiments (see my… Continue

What is a fever?

A fever is usually a healthy child's response to an illness. By raising the body temperature, a child's immune system can defend against invading organisms by increasing the release of white blood cells and other specialized disease-fighting immune cells. Most fevers in children last between one and three days, with temperatures ranging from 101 degrees F to 104 degrees F.

What to do about a child's fever is a common question. As an antipyretic…

Bone broth is wonderful for healing colds and flus!

Bone broth is easy. Roast a chicken, put the carcass in a pot of water, simmer for 1-2 days. Strain, use as soup, or for cooking rice, pasta, gravy or drink it straight. We have a cup of broth for the minerals each morning. Use only organic or pastured chickens or 100% grass-fed beef bones. You can just add the whole chicken to a large pot, simmer a couple of hours, the meat will fall off the bone, then leave the bones to simmer for 1-2 days.

Broth has HUGE healing…

Biotin, fatigue, and acidosis

I have a partial biotinidase deficiency. I only know cause I asked my doctor to test for it, and I only thought to do that because biotinidase deficiency is associated with Accutane use. And I was on Accutane 10 years ago. Biotinidase is the enzyme that recycles biotin, and deficiency is treated with high doses of biotin. I tried increasing my biotin from 5mg/day to 40mg, with the intention of tapering down to find the right dose. And not only did morning sickness kick in the next day, but my… Continue
