This is a pretty basic summary. Entire books have been written on the subject!
First of all more than 2 tsp of sugar will get your immune system revved up into overdrive. With all the toxic exposure from chemicals in our environment we need to protect our immune system at all costs. We need it working on getting rid of bacteria and viruses, not dealing with sugar poisoning!
Secondly, candida is fed by sugar. I'm not talking about fruits here, I'm talking about processed white sugar. Candida will affect our immune system and prevent proper nutrient absorption.
Sugar feeds cancer. In fact certain remedies/therapies use sugar to carry a substance that is toxic for the tumor right into it. Maple syrup and baking soda is one such example. In this case the sugar is used medicinally so that doesn't really count for you now but I just wanted to point that out anyway.

So how can you get rid of sugar cravings? Here's a few of my own tips:
Download the free book on the left hand side...scroll down if you don't see it). I used this to get rid of my nasty Starbucks Frap cravings
GABA and/or other amino acids. Get Julia Ross's book for more details.
Fill up on minerals. Cravings can occur because of a lack of minerals in the body.
Have something sour instead. Fermented veggies like sauerkraut for example will not only fix the gut but they can also help with cravings. Be patient. Pig out on sauerkraut every time you have a craving and in a few days you should notice a difference and you will feel better.
Go for a brisk walk or short run to change your brain chemistry.
Stay hydrated with good quality water. Your brain might need water, not sugar.
