Headaches

I ate tylenol and benedryl daily for 20 years for sinus headaches. Grew up on prescription antihistamines since age 10. I was told by an immunologist that taking these every day was a bad idea. It seemed like a good idea to me! After I quit working in the hospital environment with all of the cleaning chemical exposures, and quit wearing makeup after ds was just born, and removed dairy and wheat from my diet due to his food intolerances, some time later I noticed that I never had headaches… Continue

Biotin, fatigue, and acidosis

I have a partial biotinidase deficiency. I only know cause I asked my doctor to test for it, and I only thought to do that because biotinidase deficiency is associated with Accutane use. And I was on Accutane 10 years ago. Biotinidase is the enzyme that recycles biotin, and deficiency is treated with high doses of biotin. I tried increasing my biotin from 5mg/day to 40mg, with the intention of tapering down to find the right dose. And not only did morning sickness kick in the next day, but my… Continue

Raw Milk Challenge

I start this blog on a rather bold front. I am now on a countdown to the beginning of my exclusive raw milk diet. I will be drinking nothing but milk for 4 weeks. There, I said it, I can’t turn around now! I’ve begun preparing my body by completely cutting out gluten. I’ve heard that gluten causes all kinds of nasty diseases. I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (HT) and it certainly sounds like a nasty disease. It also just so happens that many people who have gluten-intolerance… Continue

Joint nutrition

The first posts are always the hardest, right? So I'll just jump on in with no introduction or lead in :)

I'm almost 37 weeks pregnant. I've been having fun trying to minimize my discomforts with nutrition, figuring that can only be good for the baby. The latest project has been connective tissue. The symptoms I'm looking at are my creaky knees (which started a few months after dd, age 3yo was born), ouchy pubic symphysis, popping back, and major abdominal separation (diastasis recti).… Continue

Vinegar For Cleaning

VINEGAR for cooking, for soaking, and FOR CLEANING.

Fresh, Clean, Safe, I use it for everything.

I rinse off salad greens, I put a bit in the pot when soaking my bones for broth, spritz some on for Bug Spray, and I clean everything in the house with it.

To Clean
I fill a spray bottle and use it freely on the… Continue

The Beautiful Truth

I just finished watching "The Beautiful Truth." It is a beautiful documentary following a 15 year-old boy, Garrett, on his homeschool project to learn about Dr. Max Gerson. Dr. Gerson found that diet could cure cancer. He developed his program in the 1920s, and his daughter, Charlotte, created the Gerson Institute in the 1970s to help cancer patients.

Garrett's project covers several topics relating to toxins and chronic illness. He travels across the US, meeting with renowned… Continue

Bokashi Composting

Early last fall, when I pulled out the summer garden, I tilled and then added bought compost. Immediately, I planted the fall garden. Most of the broccoli fell in the composted area but I had a couple extra plants that were outside the amended soil. The difference in the plants was dramatic and shocking! The weaker plants were still in my garden that has been worked for years but didn't have fresh compost. It was the latest in a series of messages I had been receiving that soil is the key - the… Continue

Having a go at building a farm!

Hi, I'm Francie. Welcome to my farm blog! I think I will be trying to relate how we are figuring out this farm thing as we go along. It's just a little family farm - no big deal. Of course, we try to use sustainable methods, with no chemicals. I'm sure we won't be perfect. My husband and I and our 3 daughters moved to NC in 2008. We have never lived on a farm, although my parents both grew up on farms. We…

Everyone needs a toolbox in their health journey and thinking outside the box has been the best tool

This is my first blog post. I'm Amy, mama to almost 7 year old Sam, 3 year old Max and 6 weeks pregnant with baby Lentil.

My boys and I have significant food allergies that have forced us to look beyond regular health care and open our minds and toolbox to new ideas.

Ten years ago the tools I had were pretty typical: my doc, my asthma meds, lots of advil, occasional vitamins, very very rarely antibiotics and semi-healthy eating. As time went on, after the birth of my first, I… Continue

Intro

So I guess I should start my first post with a little info about myself. I am currently a SAHM to two beautiful girls, ages 3 and 1. I went to school at Virginia Tech and have a degree in mechanical engineering. My passion is really in green building, so I got my general contractor's license and am now finishing my certification to do home energy audits.

After my oldest was born, I start looking into causes for some of my auto-immune disorders (ankylosing spondylitis, iritis/uveitis,… Continue

Lemon as a deodorant--Who knew?

Body odor happens. We've all been subjected to it at one point or another. Sometimes without a care, others with a whole lot of worry---company party, first time meeting boyfriend's parents, at a play group with moms you've never met before. And when it hits, there's no stopping it. So, what's a natural gal (or guy) to do?

Squeeze a lemon.

After you make that tasty pitcher of refreshing lemonade, don't toss the lemon to the compost just yet. Take…
