Glucuronidation

In this pathway, glucuric acid (made from glucose, I think) binds to the toxin, and then the pair is excreted back to the gut in the bile.

There are some bacteria that make an enzyme (beta-glucuronidase) that breaks this bond. Suddenly, the toxin is free again, and so it can be reabsorbed. Then it needs to be detoxified. Again. These bacteria would be classified as BAAAD bacteria, and so probiotics are VERY beneficial here.

There is a substance, calcium D-glucurate, which inhibit that enzyme - so the toxin isn't released. It's found naturally in some foods like apples, grapefruit, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, lettuce, and alfalfa. And it can be purchased as a supplement.

Not that you need more work, but anything you can include about things that people at home can observe on their own to figure out if, say, glucuronidation is a particular strength or weakness would be great. I found caffeine being a good measure of phase 1 detoxification to be enlightening (my husband and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum on that one) and some people have atypical reactions to common drugs (people like my husband who need extra painkillers, vs people like me who, if we get pain meds after dental work, are extra-loopy). But just as you fit it in--I am having so many ah-ha moments here that I can't keep up!
